Best Places for Dining, Shopping, and Sightseeing Near Mystic CT
Travel Guide by Glori Law
There are an incredible number of things to do year round in the Mystic area. We constantly update this guide based on our own experiences and with feedback from our guests, who now total over 120 rentals. We have gotten a good idea of what is worthwhile and what isn't. Our goal is to provide visitors with ideas and descriptions that will help to make their visit memorable. We don't get any favors, freebies, gifts etc. from any of the sites we mention.
To the left is the steamboat Sabino that is the oldest wooden, coal-fired steamboat in regular operation in the U.S. Built in 1908 in East Boothbay, Maine. It still has the original engine! It leaves from the Mystic Seaport and cruises up the Mystic river right in front of our house
The Velvet Mill is an old mill building in Stonington, that produced fine velvet for about 100 years and is now being repurposed into an artist /craftsman colony. It is in its developing phase, but some of the places I like there right now are Zest Bakery, Beer'd Brewing Company, Jewlery Nouveau, Park Framing, and Dennis Sardine Painting, but this is a place you should wander around in and see what appeals to you. Jewelry Nouveau's Jess makes beautiful custom made rings for engagements , wedding or will take your old stones and build a new ring for you. She just designed and made our daughter's engagement ring which is a beautiful Montana sapphire. She has been invited to the pretegous New York Fashion Week to show her works there this Fall. . There are many top caliber artist like Jess in this building and it is also a great place to acquire local art.
The Stonington Farmer's Market is housed here in the Winter months.
