Best Places for Dining, Shopping, and Sightseeing Near Mystic CT
Travel Guide by Glori Law
There are an incredible number of things to do year round in the Mystic area. We constantly update this guide based on our own experiences and with feedback from our guests, who now total over 120 rentals. We have gotten a good idea of what is worthwhile and what isn't. Our goal is to provide visitors with ideas and descriptions that will help to make their visit memorable. We don't get any favors, freebies, gifts etc. from any of the sites we mention.
To the left is the steamboat Sabino that is the oldest wooden, coal-fired steamboat in regular operation in the U.S. Built in 1908 in East Boothbay, Maine. It still has the original engine! It leaves from the Mystic Seaport and cruises up the Mystic river right in front of our house
Wickford, Rhode Island was established in 1709 and is a wonderful day trip destination at any time of the year. It was voted one of the top ten main street to walk on in the US! It is a charming picturesque town, with great shops and restaurants and amazing old houses with unbelievable gardens and another photographers dream spot.
The church that was used in the film the Witches of Eastwood is located here. Some of my favorite shops are The Canvas Shop, Village Reflections, and The Wickford Gourmet Factory Outlet where you can buy beautiful dishes and kitchenware, cheap. It is small enough you can visit all the shops. I first discovered Wickford because of the Wickford Art Association which is worth a trip just for that. Many of the artist from the area show and sell their works at this gallery. There is a small art sale they have around Christmas that offers small paintings very inexpensively. I have many of those and other artwork around the house from there.
I always take route one when I am going there and even though it is the other side of Rhode Island it is only about 50 minutes from the house. It is just past the turn off to go over the bridges to Newport. I go here almost on every trip to Mystic just to absorb the beauty.
